Incorporated in 1984 as a charitable trust to establish a centre in the city of Wellington, St Andrew’s Trust for the Study of Religion and Society addresses a broad range of issues related to the study of religion and society, with attention given to majority and minority religious traditions as well as to emerging non-institutional spirituality.
The mission of the trust is to explore the interrelatedness of spiritual and human values and the impact on society of developments in religion, science, technology and the arts as well as changing political climates.
Each year a series of lectures is presented by our theologian, Lloyd Geering, and every other year an international speaker is invited to give a lecture series as the Geering Lecturer.
Starting in 2012, a mini conference/seminar will be organised each September offering a free, public talk on a Friday evening with an all-day conference the next day.
From time to time, other events are organised on topical issues and themes relating to the core areas of the Trust’s work.
Books, booklets, CDs and DVDs have been produced from these lectures. Increasingly, though, it is our intention to make them available in audio and video formats.
While St. Andrew's Church is Presbyterian Christian, the trust enjoys exploring spiritual paths and recognises all spiritual seeking as valuable.
